Poker odds, or Equity of a hand represent the chances of the hand to win the pot at Showdown. It's crucial to understand that these chances are calculated mathematically for a given moment in a hand. And they imply that the hands will go to the showdown 100% of the time. So they're 100% relevant only if all the players have already gone all-in and have no more option to push out each other from the pot.
If a hand still going, you might not be able to realize your equity in full. Let's say, you have A♠2♠. Your opponent has T♥9♥. You're now on the Flop of Q♦7♥6♥. The hand is still in process, and you both have big stacks behind. According to our Holdem odds calculator, you have ~36% equity. It means that if you both reveal your cards and go to the Showdown now, you'll win the pot in 36% on average.
But in a real game, would you be able to achieve that number? Most likely no, because you have just A-high on a very dynamic board texture. Your opponent has two more streets to push you out of the pot, and you're likely to give up your hand to any aggression. And along with the hand, you will also give up your equity.
So don't interpret the numbers the calculator gives you as pure odds of winning. They are just mathematical calculations of equity, which are only relevant for all-in situations. Use these values to better understand the mathematical model of poker and how different hands stay against each other.
Let's see a few examples of poker odds calculation for typical poker situations. Every poker player constantly finds themselves in the situations listed below. To make better decisions in them, it is advisable to know the approximate chances of each side winning.
It's a typical poker scenario when two players go all-in Pre-flop while holding AK and QQ as their hole cards. After calculations, we can see that both players have almost identical chances to win the hand: 43 vs 57%.
This kind of situation in poker is called a “coin flip”. The odds of winning the hand are almost equal for both opponents, and the further play of this hand is comparable to flipping a coin.
The battle between made hands and draws is also a classic story in poker. Let's imagine you have a flush draw against a top pair with a top kicker on the Flop. How often would you hit your flush and win the hand? It's easy to check with the odds calculator:
As you can see you're doing fine having 38% equity. Far from drawing dead. However, if you don't hit your card on the Flop, you'd have only 20% left to win the hand from Turn to River.
The last situation we'll be looking at today is a battle of really strong hands on the Turn. Let's say two players go all-in on the Turn while having set and straight respectively. What are the odds of winning for these hands?
For a straight, things are pretty bad. The player with this hand hopes the board will pair, which will happen only about 23% of the time.
