Most people think of a deck of cards when they think of "poker." Chips is undoubtedly the second most common association. To launch a cash game or tournament, just combine these two components. The history of poker chips, their denomination, and the way they are given out and divided during tournaments are all topics we should discuss.

History of chips

Gaming chips didn't exist until over 200 years after the first casinos were allowed to operate in Europe in the middle of the 17th century. Prior to that time, wagers were made using cash and any valuable items, such as coins and jewelry.

The most popular poker chips in the 1800s were square and round.

Aside from wood, they were also made of ceramics and ivory. The chips' initial face value was zero, and it changed based on the color and pattern that was applied.

During the start of the 1800s, high-class gaming facilities started utilizing gold and silver chips, which were frequently set with valuable stones. They were altered during the game by cheaters who had discovered a way to counterfeit them. The business's proprietors started searching for strategies to deter counterfeiting. Clay chips featuring intricate designs, engravings, and metal inserts started to appear.

Modern casinos use chips made of complex composite materials based on ceramics. As protection is often used ultraviolet marking and radio frequency identification.

What are chips for?

Poker starting chips are used as bets and are the main currency in the game. They greatly simplify all financial transactions, which is why they are present in all live poker competitions. Even online poker always uses a visual representation of chips simply because it is convenient.

Chips are used as currency in poker tournaments. The winner is the player who has collected all of the chips from his opponents.

Paper is useless by itself, but humans give it value. Money is the most apparent parallel. Chips are worthless, but they function as the equivalent of actual money because they are made of rounded plastic with a number of chips on it.

How many chips to start with in poker?

Before the tournament starts, each player must have at least 50 big blinds. Otherwise the blinds will get too high very soon and it will be impossible to play normally.

Of course, players may have a deeper starting stack before the tournament starts. The value to aim for is 100 big blinds. The important aspect here is the planned duration of the tournament. The more chips the players have, the longer the tournament itself will take.

It's also important not to forget that tournaments involve blinds going up.

Therefore, in the middle of the event will need to make a chip-raise — to enter the game chips of a higher denomination. To do this, the current stacks of participants are exchanged. This process follows a certain actions. Each poker player puts his tokens in stacks of 20 pieces. This allows the dealer not to count them one by one, which speeds up the chip-raise.

What kind of chips do exist?

The only constant feature of poker chips is their round shape. But on the size, design, weight, and material they can vary greatly. Accordingly, their cost will be different.

  • Material. When manufacturing, use 3 main materials: plastic, composite and ceramics. Plastic — the least durable and the cheapest material. Composite chips — a higher quality option, often inside there is a metal weighing device. Ceramic is the elite choice for the best poker chip sets. It is ceramic tokens that are played in casinos.
  • Weight. Universal rule: the more weight, the more expensive and higher quality they are. In terms of weight, they vary from 10 to 14 grams. Plastic is the lightest, ceramic is the most weighty.
  • Size. Most poker clubs and casinos use chips with a diameter of 39 millimeters. Sometimes there are also sets with chips in 43 millimeters. They are produced to order.
  • Design. The largest space for creativity is the appearance and color scheme. There is no established standard of design. The most popular are poker chip sets with tokens of live WSOP and EPT series.

Exchanging Texas Holdem starting chips in cash and tournaments

At the table during a hand, there may be a situation when a player does not have the required denomination. For example, he needs to make a bet of $5 and there is at least $10 available. It is necessary to address the dealer or opponents and ask to break some of the chips into smaller denominations.

In tournaments these tasks are handled by the organizer and ideally he should calculate everything so that all necessary exchanges take place before the start or during breaks. The official rules prohibit changing poker chips at the time of the event.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many colors do I need for a tournament?

Basically somewhere around 4-5 main colors — the ratio between them should be 4/3/2/2/1.  For example, the configuration of a 500 chip poker set is as follows: 200 chips (denomination 5), 150 chips (denomination 25), 100 chips (denomination 100), 50 chips (denomination 500).

Firstly, it is advised to utilize chips of more than three colors in longer tournaments when the blinds are rather substantial towards the conclusion. This allows for the replacement of lower chip value with higher ones.
